چکیده

Despite growing evidence for an effect of species composition on carbon (C) storage and sequestration, few projects have examined the implications of such a relationship for forestry and agriculture-based climate change mitigation activities. We worked with a community in Eastern Panama to determine the average aboveand below-ground C stocks of three land-use types in their territory: managed forest, agroforests and pasture. We examined evidence for a functional relationship between tree-species diversity and C storage in each land-use type, and also explored how the use of particular tree species by community members could affect C storage. We found that managed forests in this landscape stored an average of 335 Mg C ha~ , traditional agroforests an average of 145 Mg C ha~ , and pastures an average of 46 Mg C ha~ including all vegetation-based C stocks and soil C to 40 cm depth. We did not detect a relationship between diversity and C storage; however, the relative contributions of species to C storage per hectare in forests and agroforests were highly skewed and often were not proportional to species' relative abundances. We conclude that protecting forests from conversion to pasture would have the greatest positive impact on C stocks, even though the forests are managed by community members for timber and non-timber forest products. However, because several of the tree species that contribute the most to C storage in forests were identified by community members as preferred timber species, we suggest that species-level management will be important to avoiding C-impoverishment through selective logging in these forests. Our data also indicate that expanding agroforests into areas currently under pasture could sequester significant amounts of carbon while providing biodiversity and livelihood benefits that the most common reforestation systems in the region monoculture teak plantations do not provide. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Forest carbon storage in the northeastern United States: Net effects of harvesting frequency, post-harvest retention, and wood products

Temperate forests are an important carbon sink, yet there is debate regarding the net effect of forest management practices on carbon storage. Few studies have investigated the effects of different silvicultural systems on forest carbon stocks, and the relative strength of in situ forest carbon versus wood products pools remains in question. Our research describes (1) the impact of harvesting f...

Soil properties, labile pools of soil organic carbon and their variations under broadleaf and coniferous plantation in Hyrcanian forest, northern Iran

Afforestation, as a tool to mitigate carbon emission is constrained by available land areain several countries, but Iran has the potential of plantation. In doing so, differences in soilstocks between tree species could give an indication of the effects of future managementchanges. Hence, a better understanding of tree species traits on soil properties is required topredict how changes in ecosy...

Effects of Sandy Desertified Land Reclamation on Soil Carbon Sequestration (Key Study: Kerman province)

Desertification leads to decrease in the ecosystem C pool and attendant reduction in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC). Reclamation of sandy land in arid and semi-arid has a high potential to increase carbon sequestration and improving soil quality. Our objective as to examine the changes in the soil carbon sequestration and soil properties of two soil layers (0–20 and 20-50 cm) under two types of recl...

Effects of Grazing Exclusion on Plant Productivity and Carbon Sequestration (Case Study: Gomishan Rangelands, Golestan Province, Iran)

In recent years, rangelands have been regarded as potential carbon sinks. One of the most widely suggested options to sequester more C in rangelands is the restoration of the degraded rangelands through grazing the exclusion. In present study, the effects of exclusion on the carbon sequestration of Gomishan rangelands were investigated. Three transects were established in a key area inside and...

Small Scale Effect on the Buckling Analysis of a Double-Walled Carbon Nanotube under External Radial Pressure Using Energy Method

In this paper, using energy method, small scale effects on the buckling analysis of a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) under external radial pressure is studied. The constitutive equations derived for a DWCNT using the nonlocal theory of elasticity which Eringen are presented for the first time. By minimizing the second variation of the total energy for a DWCNT, hence, the value of the non...
